For the fifth consecutive year, StreetSmart will participate in the Daan Utsav Festival, or the Festival of Giving and Joy, as a community service. This is an annual festival in India which brings people together from all walks of life to celebrate the joy of giving back to the community. It begins on Gandhi Jayanti (the birthdate of Mohandas Gandhi), October 2 and runs through the 8th.
It is a volunteer-driven event and there are plenty of ways to get involved. The only rule is you must give back to the community in some way. Daan Utsav started in 2009. As of 2015, more than 1,000 cities in India participate in this festival. Similar to Diwali, Id, or Christmas, in its spirit of giving donations, the festival brings people across all religions and social strata.
The StreetSmart team in the Bangalore, India office participates in the Festival of Giving by creating a “Wish Tree” for the office for two weeks. The tree contains “Wish Fruit,” or donation requests, and employees can donate gifts or money to grant the wishes.
Each year employees select a local organization to sponsor. This year they will donate to the Kushi Foundation, which supports needy children. This foundation provides basic school going needs (shoes, socks, clothing, water bottles, school bags, and medical support) to students. Currently, this foundation supports 80 children in an government-aided school.
StreetSmart employees look forward to every opportunity where they can make a difference in their community.
